A Senate panel in Islamabad has received a briefing on the Special Central Superior Services Examination, 2023, and discussed the need to revamp the education system in less developed areas to help their residents compete in the CSS exams. The CSS exams are mandatory for those wishing to qualify for the civil service. The chairman of the committee, Senator Rana Maqbool Ahmad, expressed concern about the "colossal quantum of failure" of the competitive examination, particularly from rural areas.
The establishment division informed committee members that presently 52 unfilled vacancies belonged to non-Muslim candidates of Punjab. They suggested that age relaxation by 32 years and one additional chance under this year's special CSS exam could increase the chances of success.
The Senate committee also discussed the issue of re-employment of civil servants after retirement and debated a bill titled the 'Civil Servants (Amendment) Bill, 2023,' designed to amend the Civil Servants Act, 1973, to stop this practice. Senator Muzafar Hussain Shah of PML-F supported the proposed amendment, saying that employment under the act should be equal for all employees. However, establishment division officials did not support the amendment and argued that re-employment was necessary to make a pool of experience available at the government's disposal.
Additionally, the Senate panel discussed the issue of unregistered LPG manufacturers and the deadly gas cylinder blasts, warning the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) to address the issue. The committee gave Ogra six weeks to provide practical results on the committee's recommendations, or the committee would proceed against the regulator in case of failure.
